Novitiate is the first step and foundation of religious life. During this period the novice discovers the basic values of the consecrated life. It is also an intense period of experience and reflection, wherein the novice begins his life in the Carmelite Order. Hence the novitiate should provide an appropriate environment which visibly manifests the values of the Carmelite life. Its atmosphere of reflection should be an invitation to prayer for the novice and for everyone.

While keeping up the lifestyle proper to novitiate, care must be taken not only to have continuity between the lifestyle of other formation houses, but also to answer the special needs of this stage of formation.
