Formation is a life-long experience, we are all called to grow more and more into the image and likeness of God, or, as St Paul says, “to be con-formed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).
Although prayer and contemplation is at the very heart of Carmel, they are not separated from nor do they exclude the apostolate. On the contrary, it is our prayer and contemplation that impel us to and are the fruitful source of our apostolate. Therefore, it is from a close union with God in Jesus Christ that Carmelite mission originates. The mission of Carmel thus is a blend of both contemplation and the apostolate.
The ardent desire of Manjummel friars to care for the spiritual needs of the faithful was very evident from the time of its inception. Manjummel friars were and are still holding that great legacy of the gospel preachers in the Kerala Catholic Church.
The pioneers of Manjummel province were men of outstanding personalities, endowed with manifold talents. They served the local church and the universal church with an indomitable spirit and left behind them traces of an admirable pattern of religious zeal for and the selfless dedication to the service of God and men. Rev. FrLouis Vypissery prepared the first catholic translation of the Gospels in Malayalam in 1896.
Within the broader family of Carmel, the Discalced Carmelite Nuns stand in a tradition of women called to live a life of allegiance to Jesus Christ, following the example of Saint Teresa. They commit their entire lives to God, as a radical response to his call
TIDES (Teresian Integral Development Society). The objectives for which the society is established are, irrespective of caste, creed, sex and community and irrespective of the financial capacity of the person, purely for philanthropic purpose:To promote works of charity for those in need.To promote developmental programs to attain total development of people.
The need for a better and qualified education is a compelling factor to social commitment to the backward communities we serve. THE CARMELITE EDUCATION TRUST registered in 1999 and its new sub-unit CARMEL ASSOCIATES’ STUDENT ENDOWMENT (CASE) established in 2000 is the results of it.
Manjummel Discalced Carmelite friars are credited with many pioneering works in social and healing ministries in Kerala Catholic Church. From the very beginning Manjummel Discalced friars cared for the poor and sick people which still continue to the date.
Education is one of the ways of the uplifting the life of the people. Through education we are able to form a generation who can work for the welfare of the church and the society. Our pioneers knew this reality very well. Hence they venture into establishing education institutions so that even poor people can afford it.
Empowerment of women is a necessity for the very development of a society, since it enhances both the quality and the quantity of human resources available for development. Empowerment includes the action of raising the status of women through education, raising awareness, literacy, and training.
