Manjummel Discalced Carmelite friars are credited with many pioneering works in social and healing ministries in Kerala Catholic Church. From the very beginning Manjummel Discalced friars cared for the poor and sick people which still continue to the date.Bro. NicholausVeoven who had already a degree to work as Assistant Surgeon in the hospital embraced the Carmelite life and founded St. Joseph’s Hospital at Manjummel in 1887. It was the first catholic hospital in Kerala and the Second one in the whole of India. For his selfless and dedicated service he was given award by two Maharajas of Travancore. To make medicine available to ordinary poor and sick people he manufactured his own medicines. Three well known medicines of Bro. Nicolaus were Droamar, Carmelite Drops and Scala. The renovated St. Joseph’s Hospital is now equipped with many medical departments, postmodern medical facilities and highly efficient doctors. Our hospital still continues to uphold its mission: to provide best medical facilities even to the poorest people in the society. The hospital also renders ayurvedic treatment (a system of traditional medicine native to India) to people through Ayurnikethan Ayurveda Hospital at Manjummel and Cure Monastery at Pius Nagar.
